Emergency Stand-by Generator
What do you do when it’s time for that baby to arrive and all the power suddenly goes off?
Well at the moment we pray!
A back-up electricity generator is critical for a hospital. If a power outage occurs, we need to be able to automatically switch to a back-up generator to ensure a continuous flow of electrical power for life support machines and everything else need to sustain human life aqnd keep working effectively. A loss of electricity affects the intensive care unit, incubators, oxygen pumps, automated monitoring machines such as heart monitors, the bright lights needed for surgery and communications equipment.
If we cannot maintain power, seriously ill and injured peoples’ lives are at risk.
Egypt experiences frequent power outages, especially during summer months when electricity consumption peaks with the use of air conditioners. Power cuts have serious impacts on all hospitals in Egypt. In August 2012, 6 neonates in incubators and 1 man in cardiac surgery died at Dasoq City in Kafr il-Sheikh governate because of a power cut. In May 2008, 4 neonates in incubators died because of a power cut.
HMH Sadat City does not have a back-up generator. This means that it cannot open their fully equipped ICU unit or use the incubator. An electrical generator is a critical and urgent need for this newly-established hospital.
